Alltid kul att vara ute och välkomna våra elever på morgonen speciellt när solen skiner!

We are often asked if we teach Sciences in English. The answer is BILINGUALISM. We want our students to master both English and Swedish as we believe that having a solid base in both languages will help them in the future. We also believe, and this has been proven many times in studies, that young learners have the ability to learn multiple languages while not having a negative impact on the retention of the actual subject.
To help them reach this level of competency we always strive to offer our lessons, in Sciences for example, in a bilingual way. Key terms are given in both English and Swedish. Explanations are also given in both language. Homework are translated as well as tests. Students are encouraged to try to answer in English but are allowed to answer in Swedish. Our teachers also use various methods in the classroom to help the students understand the key terms in both languages. Asking a friend to explain, playing a game with the Swedish terms etc. are all methods that we use to ensure that our students are exposed to both languages.
If Sweden is to continue to prosper it is crucial that students choose to study Sciences and Technology. This year 39 of our students chose a Science program at high school with 25 of them being girls. On top of this 24 other students chose Technology as a high school program. We have excellent Math and Sciences teachers and their dedication, coupled with their high energy, leads to more and more students showing an interest in Sciences.
Engelska Skolan is very much international. With staff from all corners for the world we focus on bringing an international touch to the education we provide to our students in Sundsvall. This said we are also very proud of our Swedish traditions, Lucia being one of them for example. This mixture, of both international and Swedish traditions, is an important part of who we are.
Our school is in constant evolution and yet we never change. This, I strongly believe, describes very well our school. We always want to develop but never change the values that guide us. When a new person joins us we quickly communicate this with them. Emma, one of our ex students, joined our team this week and, through her introduction week, got to meet many of the current people that work at IESS. In our last discussion we focused on one thing: Here at IESS we walk together. Yes we debate. Yes we want people to challenge our ways but once we've decided something we walk together. She seemed very pleased with this. Structure allows for creativity.
Our school is now almost 10 years old. We’ve grown from 250 to 850 and next year we are set to be around 1100 students. Divided in two schools, Junior and Senior, our school is and will continue to be the biggest in the city. Size brings many advantages but also challenges. In preparation for this we’ve been rebuilding our leadership teams and the admin around them. We’ve also invested heavily in our current physical environment with the goal of making it even better for our students. Our goal is to continue to offer the best possible education to our students which for us means contact with adults that care and know you. Will we be ready for August 2018? Yes! Construction and recruitment are going well while the departments are getting ready for the new students. For us this is nothing new, growth is in our genes! Expect a new full size gym, new kitchen, new cafeteria, new library and plenty of new classrooms!!!
We were inspected by School Inspection early in Spring. This is a very complicated process in which they look at all aspects of the organisation. We passed without a single remark. Nothing!
We've always invested in IT at Engelska Skolan Sundsvall. Mini iPads are a great tool to help students research information to allow them to discuss the accuracy of sources found on the internet. No fake news here!
I often visit lessons and this morning I observed an English and math lesson. Before the lesson starts students always line-up outside. This allows for a quiet and well structured start but it also gives the teacher the opportunity to welcome every student plus to check certain ability. This time Ms Ashfield had students translate certain terms as they entered her classroom. Perfect way of ensuring a good social environment and of making sure that students know the terms both in Swedish and in English.
